The Importance of Climate Awareness
Climate change is no longer merely an environmental issue; it is directly connected to our health, water, food, economy, and the future of coming generations. With the objective of developing awareness and a sense of responsibility among students on this important issue, Hiba Green Foundation conducted a special Climate Change & Climate Action Awareness Session for students of Classes 10 to 12 at Delhi Public School (DPS), Hapur.
The objective of the session was not merely to explain the definition of climate change, but to help students understand how environmental changes are connected to their own lives and what role they can play at an individual level.
During the session, students engaged in discussions on the difference between Climate Change, Weather and Climate, rising temperatures, water scarcity, extreme heat, irregular rainfall, and the social impacts of climate change. They were also made aware that climate change does not affect every section of society equally and that its impacts can be more severe for vulnerable and disadvantaged communities.
The programme also covered the harmful impacts of Greenhouse Gases such as Methane and Nitrous Oxide, which were explained to students through simple language and relatable examples. Students learned that although Methane and Nitrous Oxide are present in smaller quantities compared to carbon dioxide, they are highly powerful greenhouse gases in terms of their heat-trapping potential. Scientific concepts were therefore connected with everyday life to make them easier for students to understand.
The session was designed to encourage active participation rather than being a one-way lecture.
